Hyundai Palisade brake fluid problem can weaken braking

NHTSA campaign 21V840000 · Reported 2021-10-27 · Hyundai Motor America

high How serious is it? About this label

Weakened brakes mean a longer stopping distance and a higher chance of a crash; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but this should be repaired promptly.

What's wrong, in plain English

The brake fluid in certain 2021 Hyundai Palisades may be contaminated. Bad fluid can make rubber seals inside the brake master cylinder — the part that pushes fluid to the brakes when you press the pedal — swell up. When that happens, the brakes do not work as well as they should, and the vehicle takes longer to stop. Dealers replace the master cylinder and flush out the old brake fluid at no cost.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Palisade is affected. 2. Contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 (recall 212) or your dealer to book the repair as soon as you can. 3. Have the dealer replace the brake master cylinder and flush the brake fluid — free of charge.
