Hyundai brake recalls: engine fires, weak pedals and software fixes

Two very different problems dominate Hyundai's hydraulic brake recalls. The larger one is the ABS/HECU module corroding and shorting, which can start an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. It covers 2014-2021 Tucson, 2016-2018 Santa Fe, 2017-2018 Santa Fe Sport and the 2019 Santa Fe XL, and these are the only recalls here that tell owners to park outside. The rest are braking-performance defects: contaminated brake fluid swelling the master cylinder seals on the 2021 Palisade, a sharp-edged master cylinder on the 2021 Accent, a misaligned brake booster diaphragm on the 2023 Palisade, and Integrated Electronic Brake software on the 2019-2021 Kona Electric, 2019-2020 Nexo and 2025 IONIQ 5 N.
Warning signs to watch for
- Smoke, burning smell or fire from the engine compartment on the ABS module vehicles — it can happen while parked.
- A brake pedal that feels soft or sinks toward the floor (2021 Accent, 2021 Palisade master cylinder).
- Longer stopping distances or noticeably weaker braking.
- A pedal that suddenly feels hard or stiff, meaning power brake assist has been lost (2023 Palisade).
- On the 2025 IONIQ 5 N, reduced braking when left-foot braking is used, plus unintended acceleration.
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these recalls carry a stop-driving order, but the fire-risk ones come with a condition: on the affected Tucson, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport and Santa Fe XL, Hyundai says park outside and away from structures until the fuse is replaced. On the 2025 IONIQ 5 N, do not use the left-foot braking or N e-Shift features until the software update is done. For the master cylinder, booster and IEB recalls, driving is acceptable while you wait — but if the pedal goes soft, sinks, or suddenly feels stiff, get to a dealer immediately.
What the free repair involves
Fire recalls are handled by replacing the ABS multi-fuse or HECU fuse, with an Electronic Stability Control software update added on 2019-2021 Tucson. Palisade gets a new brake master cylinder and fluid flush, or a brake booster inspection and replacement. Accent gets a new master cylinder. IONIQ 5 N, Kona Electric and Nexo get updated IEB software — delivered over-the-air or by a dealer. Every repair is free.

Common questions
Do I really have to park my Tucson or Santa Fe outside?
Yes. Hyundai's notice says to park outside and away from structures, because the ABS module can short and start an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is parked, not only while it is being driven. Keep doing it until the fuse is replaced.
Can I still drive my 2025 IONIQ 5 N?
Hyundai does not tell you to park it, but you must not use the left-foot braking or N e-Shift features until the update is installed. The IEB and VCU software update covers both the reduced braking and the additional acceleration concern.
There are two Palisade brake recalls — are they the same problem?
No. The 2021 Palisade recall is contaminated brake fluid swelling the master cylinder inner-cup seals, fixed with a new master cylinder and a fluid flush. The 2023 recall is a misaligned brake booster diaphragm leaking vacuum, fixed by inspecting and replacing the booster.
