Serious: an engine that shuts off in traffic can leave you without power and lead to a crash, and while the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, you should get the free repair as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

The fuel pump sits in the gas tank and pushes gasoline to the engine. Inside these pumps, small electrical parts and wires were joined together the wrong way during manufacturing. That bad connection can make the pump quit working. If the pump stops, the engine stops getting fuel, and the car can shut off while you are driving, possibly in traffic or at highway speed. Dealers will install a new fuel pump at no cost.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Outlander is included.
2. Call your Mitsubishi dealer, or Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820 (recall SR-22-001), and book an appointment.
3. Have the dealer replace the fuel pump — the repair is free.

Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2022 Outlander vehicles. The commutator and wires inside the fuel pump may be fused incorrectly, potentially causing the fuel pump to fail.
Safety risk: Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 18, 2022. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-22-001.
