What's wrong, in plain English

A software mistake in the dashboard touchscreen system — the screen that runs the radio, maps, and camera — can stop the backup camera picture from coming up when you shift into reverse. Federal rules require a working rear view image, so these vehicles do not meet that standard. A dealer will reload the screen software at no charge. Mitsubishi has since issued a newer recall, number 25V369, that takes the place of this one.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included, and check recall 25V369, which replaced this one.
2. Call your Mitsubishi dealer or customer service at 1-888-648-7820 and ask about recall SR-23-001.
3. The dealer updates the infotainment software free of charge.
4. Until it is fixed, turn and look behind you before backing up.

Summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Outlander and 2023 Outlander PHEV vehicles. Due to a software error in the in-vehicle infotainment system (A-IVI), the backup camera rearview image may not appear on the display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk
A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy
Dealers will update the A-IVI software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 20, 2023. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-23-001. This recall was replaced by NHTSA recall number 25V369.
