Serious — it only matters in a crash, but it can injure the very people the seat belt is supposed to protect, so have it fixed promptly.

What's wrong, in plain English

The front passenger seat belt has a small device that yanks the belt tight the instant a crash begins, to hold the person in place. It works by setting off a tiny charge, and on these cars that charge can blow the housing apart instead of just tightening the belt. Metal fragments can then fly into the cabin and strike people inside. Dealers replace the part free. Hyundai later replaced this recall with a newer one, so cars already repaired need the newer fix too.

What you should do

2. Contact a Hyundai dealer for an appointment, or call Hyundai at 1-855-371-9460 (recall 220).
3. Get the seat belt pretensioners replaced — it costs you nothing, even if your car was repaired once already.

Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2022 Elantra and Elantra HEV vehicles. In the event of a crash, the front passenger-side seat belt pretensioner may explode upon deployment.
Safety risk: An exploding seat belt pretensioner can project metal fragments into the vehicle, striking vehicle occupants and resulting in injury.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the seat belt pretensioners, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 19, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 220. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall numbers 21V-796 and 22V-069. This recall is replaced by NHTSA recall number 22V-354. Vehicles already repaired under this recall will need to have the new remedy completed.
