Dodge Durango steering may bind or fail suddenly

NHTSA campaign 22V154000 · Reported 2022-03-14 · Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

critical How serious is it? About this label

Difficulty steering or a total loss of steering control is a crash risk that can hit without warning, so while the notice does not tell owners to park the vehicle, book the repair immediately.

What's wrong, in plain English

The steering rack is the gear assembly that turns your front wheels when you turn the wheel. A bar inside it may not have been hardened enough during manufacturing, so it can bind, or stick, inside the rack. When that happens the steering can feel very hard to turn, or you can lose steering control altogether, which can cause a crash. A dealer will replace the whole steering gear assembly at no charge to you.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Durango is in recall Z18.
2. Contact your dealer right away, or FCA US customer service at 1-800-852-1403.
3. Have the steering gear assembly replaced — it is free.
