Ford Escape and Bronco Sport can leak engine oil

NHTSA campaign 22V191000 · Reported 2022-03-25 · Ford Motor Company

critical How serious is it? About this label

An oil leak onto hot engine parts can start a fire, so this is serious; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but have it inspected promptly and stop driving if you see smoke or smell burning oil.

What's wrong, in plain English

These vehicles have a part on the engine called an oil separator housing. On the recalled vehicles that housing can crack, and engine oil can leak out. If the oil drips onto hot parts such as the engine or exhaust, it can catch fire. A dealer will look at the oil separator for cracks or leaks and replace the part and its seals if needed. Watch for oil spots under the car or a burning smell while you wait for service.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is on the list. 2. Contact your Ford dealer or Ford at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 22S21) to book the inspection. 3. Any needed replacement of the oil separator and seals is free.
