Hyundai Accent steering column may detach while driving

NHTSA campaign 22V311000 · Reported 2022-05-06 · Hyundai Motor America

critical How serious is it? About this label

Complete loss of steering control can happen without warning and cause a crash, so treat this as urgent and get it inspected as soon as possible.

What's wrong, in plain English

A bolt in the steering column may not have been tightened properly at the factory. The steering column is the shaft that connects your steering wheel to the parts that turn the front wheels. If that bolt is loose, the column can separate from the steering rack, and turning the wheel would no longer turn the car. Dealers will check the bolt and tighten it if needed, free of charge.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Accent is affected. 2. Contact your Hyundai dealer or Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 and reference recall 226. 3. Have the lower steering column bolt inspected and tightened, free of charge.
