Hyundai does not tell owners to stop driving, but if you are in a crash the part meant to protect you could injure you with flying metal, so schedule the free repair as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

In these 2020-2021 Accents, the front seat belts have a device that yanks the belt tight the instant a crash starts. On the recalled cars, that device can blow apart instead of working normally. If that happens in a crash, metal pieces can be thrown into the cabin and hit the driver or front passenger, causing injuries on top of the crash itself. A dealer replaces both front seat belt tighteners at no cost. Hyundai later issued a newer repair, so even already-fixed cars need the new one.

2. Book a free appointment with a Hyundai dealer to replace the front seat belt pretensioners — do this even if your car was already repaired under this recall, because a newer remedy (22V-354) replaces it.

Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Accent vehicles. In the event of a crash, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioner(s) may explode upon deployment.
Safety risk: An exploding seat belt pretensioner can project metal fragments into the vehicle, striking vehicle occupants and resulting in injury.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the seat belt pretensioners, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 24, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 219. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 21V-796. This recall is replaced by NHTSA recall number 22V-354. Vehicles already repaired under this recall will need to have the new remedy completed.
