Hyundai Sonata and Accent trunks may not open from inside

NHTSA campaign 21V619000 · Reported 2021-08-06 · Hyundai Motor America

medium How serious is it? About this label

A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing their risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The latch on the trunk lid can become damaged. If that happens, the release handle inside the trunk will not open it, so anyone who ends up shut in the trunk — most often a child playing — cannot get out on their own. Federal rules require trunks to open from the inside, and these cars no longer meet that rule. Nothing about the way the car drives is affected. A dealer will replace the latch base at no cost.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your car is covered. 2. Call Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 (recall 208) or your dealer to schedule the repair. 3. Have the trunk latch base replaced — it is free.
