What's wrong, in plain English

On some Model 3 and Model Y cars, one or both taillights can stop lighting up now and then. Working taillights are how drivers behind you see your car, especially at night, in rain, or when you slow down. If they go dark, another driver may not spot you in time. Tesla has already sent out a free software update that fixes this over the internet, so no dealer visit is needed.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your car is covered. 2. Make sure your car is connected to Wi-Fi and accept the free over-the-air software update when it appears. 3. If the update does not arrive, contact Tesla at 1-877-798-3752 (recall SB-22-00-016).

Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles. One or both taillights may intermittently fail to illuminate.
Safety risk
A taillight that fails to illuminate may reduce the visibility of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Tesla has released an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 14, 2023. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-22-00-016. (over-the-air software update)
