Ford Escape and Bronco Sport fuel injector may leak

NHTSA campaign 22V859000 · Reported 2022-11-18 · Ford Motor Company

critical How serious is it? About this label

Very serious: leaking fuel near a hot engine can start an under-hood fire, so get this done right away and have the car checked if you smell gasoline or see a warning light.

What's wrong, in plain English

These Escape and Bronco Sport models with the 1.5-liter engine have fuel injectors — the parts that spray gasoline into the engine — that can crack. A cracked injector lets fuel leak out under the hood, where the engine and exhaust get very hot. Leaking gasoline near hot parts can catch fire. The dealer fix is new engine software that watches for a leak, plus a drain tube that carries any leaking fuel away from hot parts. Cars fixed under the earlier recall need this newer repair too.

What you should do

2. Contact a Ford dealer and ask for recall 22S73 (NHTSA 22V859000), or call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
3. Have the dealer install the updated engine software and the drain tube — the repair is free.
