What's wrong, in plain English

The side curtain airbags, which drop down along the windows to protect your head in a side crash or rollover, may have been put in incorrectly at the factory. Because of that, they may not open the way they are supposed to when a crash happens. You would have no way of knowing there is a problem until it is too late. Kia dealers will inspect the airbags and reinstall them correctly if needed, and the work costs you nothing.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your K5 is included. 2. Schedule the airbag inspection with a Kia dealer, or call Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (recall SC263). 3. The inspection and reinstallation are free of charge.

Summary: Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2021-2023 K5 vehicles. The side curtain air bags may have been installed incorrectly, causing them not to deploy properly in the event of a crash.
Safety risk: Air bags that do not deploy as intended can increase the risk of injury in a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and reinstall the side curtain air bags, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 7, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC263.
