Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana cutaway van wiring fire risk

NHTSA campaign 23V247000 · Reported 2023-04-06 · General Motors, LLC

critical How serious is it? About this label

Serious, since the stated risk is fire; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving or park outside, but have the wiring sealed as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

These are cutaway vans — the bare chassis and cab sold to be finished off as a box truck, shuttle, or camper. They were wired ahead of time for an optional rear heating and air-conditioning system. If that system was never fitted, the connectors and wires for the blower motor are left open and unused. Sitting exposed like that, the circuit can corrode and overheat, which GM says raises the risk of a fire. A dealer will seal the wiring properly.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included.
2. Call Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782 and ask about recall N222386050; letters were mailed May 2, 2023.
3. The dealer seals the rear heating and air-conditioning wiring at the left side pillar free of charge.
