Chevrolet electrical recalls: battery fires, stalls and software glitches

Chevrolet's electrical recalls are dominated by the Bolt EV high-voltage battery, which can catch fire when charged to full or nearly full capacity. That defect ran from the 2019 Bolt EV through 2020-2022 Bolt EV and 2022 Bolt EUV, and the diagnostic software fix itself was recalled twice in 2024 for failing to install. Fire also drives the 2019-2020 Silverado 1500 battery cable recall and the Express Cutaway rear HVAC wiring recall. The rest are software: a 2018 Malibu 1.5L turbo that can stall, the 2023 Colorado braking on its own, a blank instrument display on the 2024 Trax, a quiet pedestrian alert on the 2025 Equinox EV, and 2024 EVs losing drive power.
Warning signs to watch for
- Engine stalling or a sudden loss of engine power (2019-2020 Silverado 1500, 2018 Malibu 1.5L turbo)
- Automatic emergency braking engaging when there is no obstacle ahead (2023 Colorado)
- The instrument panel display going blank at startup or while driving (2024 Trax, Encore GX, Envista)
- Loss of drive power in a 2024 Blazer EV, Silverado EV or other GM EV with the rear drive unit fault
- No stated warning before a Bolt EV battery fire — which is exactly why the charging and parking limits matter
Is it safe to keep driving?
Split this group in two. The Bolt EV and EUV battery recalls carry park-outside instructions: GM does not tell you to stop driving, but limit charging to 90 percent, charge more often, avoid running below about 70 miles of range, and park outside after charging rather than indoors or overnight. The remaining recalls — the Silverado battery cable, Express Cutaway wiring, Malibu stall, Colorado braking, blank Trax display, Equinox EV pedestrian sound, and the 2024 EV drive units — carry no stop-driving or park-outside instruction, so driving until the repair is acceptable.
What the free repair involves
Many are software: dealers reprogram the Malibu ECM, the Colorado front camera module, and the Equinox EV pedestrian alert software, while the Trax display and Corvette hood-latch fixes can arrive over the air. Hardware work includes cleaning and reattaching the Silverado B+ cable, sealing Express Cutaway HVAC circuits, replacing 2024 EV rear drive units, and Bolt battery diagnostic software. All free.

Common questions
Can I still charge my Bolt at home?
GM's interim instructions say to set the Target Charge Level to 90 percent, charge more frequently, avoid depleting the battery below roughly 70 miles of range, and park the car outside after charging rather than in a garage overnight.
My Bolt was already repaired under the earlier recall. Am I finished?
Possibly not. Two 2024 recalls cover 2020-2022 Bolt EV and 2022 Bolt EUV vehicles where the advanced diagnostic software may have been installed incorrectly or failed to install, so the charging limits and park-outside steps apply again until it is confirmed.
Which of these can be fixed without a dealer visit?
Only a couple. The 2024 Trax, Encore GX and Envista blank-display fix can be done by a dealer or over the air, and the 2020 Corvette hood-latch software update is also over-the-air. Battery, wiring and drive-unit work needs a dealer.
