Losing steering or having it lock up while driving is extremely dangerous and can happen with no warning; the notice does not tell owners to park the vehicle, but this repair should be treated as urgent.

What's wrong, in plain English

Because of a mistake during manufacturing, the steering gear box on some Pilots can contain a loose ball bearing. That loose part can cause you to lose steering control, or it can make the steering lock up so the wheel will not turn. This can happen while you are driving, without warning. A dealer will replace the entire electric power steering rack with a new one, at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Pilot is included in recall 23V735000.
2. Call your Honda dealer right away, or Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 (recall FFX), to book the repair.
3. Have the dealer replace the electric power steering rack — the repair is free.
