Driving without a speedometer or warning lights raises your crash risk, but the vehicle itself still drives normally and the notice does not tell owners to stop using it.

What's wrong, in plain English

A software glitch in the module that runs the digital dashboard can make the screen behind the steering wheel go blank. It may happen when you start the vehicle or while you are driving. When the screen is blank, you cannot see how fast you are going and you will not see warning lights telling you about problems like low oil pressure or a brake issue. The fix is a free software update, done either at a dealer or sent to the vehicle over the air.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is affected. 2. Accept the over-the-air software update if your vehicle offers it, or book the update with a dealer. 3. Call Buick at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 (recall A232424320) — the update is free.

Summary
General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024 Buick Encore GX, Envista, and Chevrolet Trax vehicles. The software in the Virtual Cockpit Unit Module (VCU) may cause the instrument panel display to intermittently go blank at vehicle startup or while driving.
Safety risk
A blank instrument panel will not show critical information, such as vehicle speed and warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
The VCU software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2023. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is A232424320. (over-the-air software update)
