Toyota Corolla Cross: passenger airbag may not open properly
high How serious is it? About this label
Serious, because a front passenger could be badly hurt in a crash if the airbag does not deploy correctly, though the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.
What's wrong, in plain English
The plastic dashboard on the passenger side is supposed to have a built-in weak seam so the passenger airbag can burst through it in a crash. On these vehicles the dashboard may have been made without that seam, so the passenger airbag may not open the way it should. These cars were already looked at once under an earlier recall, but they must go back to the dealer for another inspection and, if needed, a new dashboard.
What you should do
2. Call your Toyota dealer or Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 (recall 23TA16) and schedule the follow-up inspection.
3. Have the dashboard inspected and replaced if needed — the repair is free.
