Volvo electrical recalls: EX30 battery fires, blown fuses and software faults

This group splits into two fleets. On the truck side, Volvo Trucks recalls run from blown or failed fuses (2018-2020 VAH, VHD, VNL and VNR transmissions that will not shift) to a coolant line in the VNR Electric's high-voltage battery pack that can unseat, lose coolant and short circuit, to Bendix EC80 control units on 2020-2025 VN, VAH, VHD and VNRE trucks that stop processing braking and stability commands, and to 2025-2026 VNL instrument panels that fail while driving. On the car side, the 2025 EX30's high-voltage battery was recalled twice in 2026 for short circuits and overheating, while software or fuse faults hit the 2024 XC40's turn signal, 2017-2019 telematics across XC90, S90, V60 and V90, and 2019-2020 low-pressure fuel pumps.
Warning signs to watch for
- A transmission that will not shift, or an engine that shuts off unexpectedly at speed, after a fuse blows.
- The instrument panel going dark without notice while driving a 2025-2026 VNL.
- Braking and stability aids quietly stopping work on trucks with the Bendix EC80 ECU, often with no obvious sign.
- The left rear turn signal not functioning on a 2024 XC40.
- Telematics and driver support systems, including emergency calling, not working properly after a crash or injury.
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group tells you to stop driving, including the two EX30 battery recalls. The January 2026 EX30 notice does tell owners to park outside and away from structures and to limit charging to a maximum of 70% until the repair; the February 2026 notice repeats the 70% charge limit. The trucks can stay in service while you schedule the free work, but a truck that loses shifting, braking aids or its instrument panel can cause a crash, so do not let it wait.
What the free repair involves
It varies by recall. Dealers replace fuses on the affected trucks and cars, reprogram the Bendix EC80 ECU software, replace 2025-2026 VNL instrument panel clusters, and correct the Vehicle Connectivity Module software. Volvo Trucks works with battery maker Akasol to inspect and replace VNR Electric batteries; dealers inspect and replace EX30 battery modules as necessary. The 2024 XC40 update comes from a dealer or over-the-air. All free of charge.

Common questions
Can I still charge my 2025 EX30 to 100%?
No. Both 2026 notices say to limit charging to a maximum of 70% until the recall repair is complete, and the January notice also advises parking outside and away from structures because of the fire risk.
Why was the EX30 battery recalled twice?
Both notices describe the same failure on 2025 EX30 vehicles — a high-voltage battery that may short circuit and overheat — and in both, dealers inspect and replace the battery modules as necessary. Check your VIN, since both may apply.
Does the Bendix EC80 truck recall need new parts?
No. Dealers reprogram the ECU software free of charge on affected 2020-2025 VN, VAH, VHD and VNRE trucks. Owner notification letters were mailed December 9, 2024, and Volvo Trucks customer service is 1-800-528-6586.
