Kia Telluride engine parts may break and cause fire

NHTSA campaign 24V077000 · Reported 2024-02-07 · Kia America, Inc.

critical How serious is it? About this label

This is a severe defect: it can cause both a sudden loss of power that risks a crash and an engine fire, so get it repaired right away, though the notice does not tell owners to park the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

Small springs inside the engine of these Tellurides can snap while you are driving. If that happens, the engine can stop delivering power, so the vehicle slows or quits moving in traffic without warning. In a worse case, the broken parts can punch a hole right through the engine block, letting oil escape onto hot engine parts, which can start a fire. The dealer replaces the engine sub-assembly — a major internal engine repair — at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Telluride is included. 2. Contact your Kia dealer, or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (recall SC296), to schedule the engine repair. 3. Have the engine sub-assembly replaced — the repair is free.
