Leaking gasoline near hot engine parts can start a fire, which makes this serious; Ford has not told owners to park the vehicle or stop driving, but you should get the free repair done right away and have the car checked if you smell fuel.

What's wrong, in plain English

Ford is recalling certain 2022-2023 Bronco Sport and 2022 Escape vehicles with the 1.5-liter engine. A fuel injector, the part that sprays gasoline into the engine, can crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment. If that gasoline reaches something hot, such as the engine or exhaust parts, it can start a fire. Dealers will update the engine software so it can detect a leak and will add a drain tube, all free. Letters were mailed April 24, 2024.

2. Call your Ford dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, and give them recall number 24S16.
3. Book the software update and drain tube installation - both are free.

Safety risk
A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will update the engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection and install a drain tube, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 24, 2024. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S16. This recall is an expansion of previous recall number 22V-859.
