Unexpected braking in traffic plus weakened emergency braking is a genuine crash risk, and although the notice does not restrict driving, you should consider leaving adaptive cruise control switched off until the sensor is realigned.

What's wrong, in plain English

The radar sensor at the front of these Escapes was aimed incorrectly when the vehicle was built. Because of that, adaptive cruise control can mistake something overhead, such as a bridge or a sign, for an object in your lane and slow the vehicle down or even stop it for no reason. The same radar also feeds the forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking systems, so those may work poorly or not work at all. A dealer adjusts the angle of the sensor.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Escape is covered (Ford's recall number is 24S39).
2. Contact your Ford dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 to book the radar adjustment.
3. The adjustment is done at no charge; avoid using adaptive cruise control until it is completed.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Escape two-wheel drive vehicles equipped with adaptive cruise control. The cruise control radar module was misaligned during production.
Safety risk
Misalignment of the radar module can result in the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) misclassifying an overhead object as an object in the vehicle's path, causing the vehicle to unexpectedly slow and/or stop. Other safety systems that depend on the radar model (Pre-Collision Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Auto Emergency Braking) could have diminished or lost function. These conditions increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will adjust the angle of the radar module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 3, 2024. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S39.
