Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX curtain airbags deploy wrong

NHTSA campaign 24V461000 · Reported 2024-06-20 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

medium How serious is it? About this label

The airbag still works but may not shield occupants properly in a crash, raising the risk of injury; you can keep driving, and there is no instruction to park the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

The side curtain airbags drop down from above the side windows in a crash and are meant to keep people from being thrown out of the vehicle. On these vehicles the airbag may not unroll the way it should, and if a window is open it can partly deploy outside the vehicle instead of covering the window opening. When that happens it does not protect the people sitting beside it as well as it is supposed to.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is covered.
2. Book the repair with a Toyota or Lexus dealer, or call 1-800-331-4331 (Toyota recalls 24TB09/24TA09, Lexus 24LB05/24LA05).
3. The dealer replaces the driver and passenger curtain airbag assemblies at no cost; letters were mailed November 4, 2024.
