Tesla Model 3, S, and Y hood latch warning fails

NHTSA campaign 24V554000 · Reported 2024-07-24 · Tesla, Inc.

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious — a hood that flies open blocks the driver's view and increases the risk of a crash, but the fix is already available as a software update; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

After the hood has been opened, the latch may not notice that the hood is still unlatched, so the car does not warn you. If you drive off that way, the hood can swing all the way open and block your view of the road. Tesla fixed this with a free over-the-air software update sent to the car, so there is nothing to schedule. Check that your car has taken the update, and always make sure the hood is shut.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included (Tesla's recall number is SB-24-00-012).
2. Make sure your vehicle has installed the free over-the-air software update; keep it connected to Wi-Fi so updates can download.
3. If the update has not arrived, contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 or a Tesla service center at no cost.
