Volkswagen Atlas brakes can lose function from bad part

Losing braking is one of the most dangerous failures a vehicle can have and can cause a crash with little warning, so contact your dealer immediately, and do not drive the vehicle if the brake pedal feels soft, sinks, or a brake warning light comes on.

What's wrong, in plain English

The brake master cylinder is the part that pushes brake fluid to the brakes when you press the pedal. On these 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles, the wrong internal retainer piece may have been fitted inside it, and that piece can block the port the brake fluid flows through. With that passage blocked, the brakes can stop working. Dealers will replace the brake master cylinder at no charge to the owner.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls right away to see whether your Atlas is affected. 2. Contact your Volkswagen dealer or Volkswagen Customer Relations at 1-800-893-5298 (recall 471F) and ask for the free master cylinder replacement as a priority. 3. If braking feels at all wrong, stop driving and have the vehicle towed to the dealer.

Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2024 Atlas and 2024 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. The brake master cylinder may have been assembled with an incorrect secondary piston spring retainer, which can block the brake fluid port.
Safety risk
An obstructed brake fluid port can cause a loss of brake function, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the brake master cylinder, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 21, 2024. Additionally, vehicles that were added to the population on November 21, 2024, their letters were mailed on December 2, 2024. Owners may contact Volkswagen Customer Relations at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 471F.
