Volkswagen Atlas backup camera image can look distorted

NHTSA campaign 25V334000 · Reported 2025-05-21 · Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

Moderate: the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but backing up with a distorted camera image increases the risk of a crash, so look over your shoulder and use your mirrors until it is fixed.

What's wrong, in plain English

Some 2024-2025 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs have a software error in the backup camera. When you shift into reverse, the picture on the dashboard screen can come out distorted instead of showing a clear view behind you. Because of this, these vehicles do not meet the federal rear-visibility rule. A garbled image makes it harder to see people, pets or objects behind the SUV while backing up, which raises the chance of hitting something.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Atlas is covered.
2. Contact your Volkswagen dealer, or customer service at 1-800-893-5298, and mention recall 91SB.
3. Have the dealer update the camera control unit software, free of charge.
