Tesla Model S Driver Airbag May Tear Open

NHTSA campaign 24V967000 · Reported 2024-12-24 · Tesla, Inc.

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious but not urgent in the sense of parking the car: nothing about the way it drives changes, and Tesla has not told owners to stop driving, but the driver is less protected in a crash until the airbag is replaced.

What's wrong, in plain English

Tesla says the driver's airbag in these cars may tear open as it inflates during a crash. The airbag is the cushion in the steering wheel that is supposed to catch you before you hit the wheel or the windshield. If it rips instead of holding air, it will not cushion you the way it should. The cars do not meet federal crash-protection rules because of this. Tesla will replace the airbag unit at no cost.
