Ford trucks and SUVs may not brake towed trailers

This is a serious risk whenever you are towing, since the vehicle may take much longer to stop; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but avoid towing a trailer with electric brakes until the free repair is done.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain Ford F-150, Maverick, Expedition, F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks and Lincoln Navigator SUVs were fixed incorrectly under an earlier recall, so the problem remains. Because of a software error, the built-in trailer brake controller may fail to apply the brakes on a trailer that uses electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes. The trailer then pushes the vehicle instead of helping it slow down, so stopping takes much longer than normal. That extra stopping distance makes a crash more likely.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm recall 25V132000 (Ford's number 25S18) applies, even if the earlier repair was already performed.
2. Schedule the free trailer brake control module software update with your Ford or Lincoln dealer, or call 1-866-436-7332.
3. Until the update is installed, be very cautious about towing and leave far more room to stop.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2022 F-150, 2022 Maverick, Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 22V-193. Due to a software error, a towed trailer equipped with an electric or electric-over hydraulic brake system may not brake.
Safety risk
Loss of trailer brake functionality can extend the distance required to stop, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the integrated trailer brake control module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 11, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S18.
