A hitch coming off at road speed is a real hazard to other drivers, and while the notice does not tell you to stop driving, you should get the bolts tightened before your next towing trip.

What's wrong, in plain English

If your CX-50 was fitted with a Mazda accessory trailer hitch, the bolts holding that hitch to the body may work loose over time. If they loosen enough, the whole hitch assembly can separate from the vehicle, either while you are towing or during ordinary everyday driving. A hitch that drops onto the road becomes an obstacle for you and for the drivers behind you. The repair is straightforward: a dealer tightens the hitch bolts properly. CX-50s without that accessory hitch are not affected.

Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2024-2025 CX-50 vehicles equipped with Mazda Genuine Accessory trailer hitches. The trailer hitch assembly bolts may loosen and cause the assembly to separate from the vehicle body during towing or normal driving conditions.
Safety risk: A detached trailer hitch assembly can create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will tighten the trailer hitch bolts, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 4, 2025. Mazda's number for this recall is 7225C.
