Ford Escape and Bronco Sport oil leak and fire risk

NHTSA campaign 25V372000 · Reported 2025-06-03 · Ford Motor Company

critical How serious is it? About this label

This is the most serious kind of defect — losing power in traffic or an engine fire — and while Ford has not told owners to park these vehicles, you should get it handled immediately and take any oil smell, smoke, or low-oil warning seriously.

What's wrong, in plain English

The cylinder head, a major part sitting on top of the engine, may have been made incorrectly. Small plugs pressed into it can fail and let engine oil leak out. Losing oil can make the engine lose power while you are driving. Oil that drips onto hot engine or exhaust parts can also catch fire. The fix is replacing the cylinder head assembly at a Ford dealer.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is covered.
2. Call your Ford dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and ask about recall 25S61.
3. Schedule the cylinder head replacement — the repair is free.
