Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra defroster can stop working

NHTSA campaign 25V577000 · Reported 2025-09-04 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

medium How serious is it? About this label

A windshield you cannot clear increases the risk of a crash in certain conditions, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving — take extra care in cold or humid weather until it is fixed.

What's wrong, in plain English

If the heating and cooling system in these electric SUVs develops a fault — for example, if the electric compressor fails — the defroster and defogger can stop working. That means you may not be able to clear fog or ice from the windshield, so your view of the road can get much worse in cold or damp weather. Dealers will reprogram the software that runs the climate system and will check the electric compressor, replacing it free if it is bad.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is affected. 2. Contact your Toyota or Subaru dealer — Toyota customer service is 1-800-331-4331 — and mention recall 25TB07/25TA07 (Subaru WRD-25). 3. Have the climate control software updated and the compressor inspected at no charge.
