This is serious because a seat belt that does not restrain you properly raises the risk of injury in a crash, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, so keep wearing your belt and get the repair done promptly.

What's wrong, in plain English

A part inside both front seat belt retractors — the spring-loaded reels that pull the belt snug — may have been damaged when these vehicles were built. The damaged piece is a torsion bar, which helps control how the belt holds you during a crash. The belts on the front seats may look and feel completely normal, but they may not hold a person properly if a crash happens. BMW will replace both front retractors.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is affected, or call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
2. Schedule a service visit with a BMW or MINI dealer to have both front seat belt retractors replaced at no cost to you.
3. Watch for your owner notification letter, which was mailed November 13, 2025, and bring it with you to the dealer.

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2025-2026 X1 and X2, MINI Cooper Convertible, MINI Cooper, Mini Countryman S ALL4, and 2025 MINI Countryman SE ALL4 vehicles. The torsion bar in both front seat belt retractors may have been damaged during production.
Safety risk
A damaged seat belt retractor may not properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy
Dealers will replace both front seat belt retractors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 13, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) will be searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 7, 2025.
