Why do BMW seat belts keep getting recalled for retractors and bolts?
Eight recalls, and the front seat belt is the common target. Retractor hardware repeats: emergency locking retractors on 2018 4 Series and M4 convertibles, retractors on 2021 2 Series, 4 Series, 330e, M3 and X1, and damaged torsion bars in both front retractors on 2025-2026 X1, X2 and MINI Cooper and Countryman models. Fasteners are the second thread — untightened buckle bolts on 2021 330i, M340i, M3 and 330e. The rest are electronic or assembly issues: buckle sensors on 2020 X3, X4 and 3 Series, belt detection on the 2024 XM and 2025 X5, X6 and X7 that can keep airbags from deploying properly, a missing chime on 2019-2022 3 and 4 Series, and a 2023 X1 rear belt pinched by trim.
Warning signs to watch for
- A front belt that does not lock when you tug it sharply
- No audible seat belt warning when someone is unbuckled, or a belted passenger still flagged as unbelted
- A second-row belt that binds or catches on the interior trim panel in an X1
- Play or movement where the belt buckle assembly bolts to the body
- Several of these faults give no sign at all — they only matter in a crash
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these eight recalls tells owners to stop driving or park outside, and the vehicles drive normally — the danger shows up in a crash. BMW describes the 2020 buckle sensors, the 2021 retractors and the missing warning chime as the least urgent. Treat the front retractor and bolt recalls — the M4 emergency locking retractors, the 2021 buckle bolts, and the X1, X2 and MINI torsion bars — as prompt appointments. In every case, keep wearing your belt until the repair is done.
What the free repair involves
Everything here is free of charge. Dealers inspect and, where needed, replace front seat belt assemblies, retractors or buckles; on 2025-2026 X1, X2 and MINI models they replace both front retractors outright. Others inspect and replace lower front belts, re-secure or replace the buckle bolt connection, adjust the X1 trim panel, or update receiver audio module software to restore the warning chime.

Common questions
My belt looks and works fine — do I still need the recall done?
Yes. Most of these defects, including untightened bolts, retractor torsion bar damage and belt detection faults, cannot be judged by feel. The dealer inspects and replaces parts only if needed, so an inspection that finds nothing still closes the recall.
Can a seat belt recall really affect my airbags?
In the 2024 XM and 2025 X5, X6 and X7 recall, yes. The system may wrongly detect that occupants are belted, which can prevent belt warnings and stop the airbags from deploying as intended in a crash. Dealers replace the front lower belts as necessary.
Why is my MINI included in a BMW seat belt recall?
BMW of North America files recalls for MINI as well. The 2025-2026 front retractor torsion bar recall covers MINI Cooper, Cooper Convertible and Countryman models alongside the BMW X1 and X2. Both front retractors are replaced free of charge.
