Buying a used 2018 Mazda CX-5? Check these 3 recalls first
Two of this year's three recalls point the same direction: an engine-stall repair covering the Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5, plus a separate fuel pump failure that can also stall the engine. Neither carries a stop-driving or park-outside warning. The third, medium severity, covers side curtain airbags that may not unfold properly. Of 117 unverified owner complaints filed with NHTSA, 95 are logged under ENGINE and 17 under power train, with one crash, one injury and no fires.
Before you buy
- Get the 17-character VIN from the seller and run it at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It shows which recalls are still unrepaired on that exact car.
- Run the VIN through a Mazda dealer to confirm both stall recalls, engine and fuel pump, were actually completed
- Ask the seller directly whether the car has ever stalled, hesitated or failed to restart
- Verify the side curtain airbag recall was performed and that no airbag warning light is lit
- Open recalls are repaired free at any Mazda dealer, whoever owns the car — an open recall is a to-do item, not a bill.
