Acura brake recalls: leaks, loose pedals and sudden pressure loss
Six recalls with six different mechanisms, but a pattern in which models keep appearing. The MDX shows up three times: 2017-2019 models for rear brake caliper pistons with insufficient coating that lets gas pockets weaken braking, the 2020 MDX for a brake booster tie rod fastener that was improperly assembled, and 2023-2025 models for a brake pedal pivot pin that was not secured. The TLX shares that pedal recall across 2021-2025. Separately, 2016-2020 ILX sedans can suffer a deformed master cylinder seal from contaminated brake fluid, 2023 RDX and Integra can leak brake fluid from a VSA modulator ball valve, and the 2024 ZDX can have its ABS release brake pressure unexpectedly.
Warning signs to watch for
- A brake pedal that travels farther than normal or sits out of its usual position
- Reduced braking power or longer stopping distances
- Unintended vehicle movement when the brake hold feature is engaged (2023 RDX and Integra)
- Brakes releasing pressure unexpectedly as ABS activates on the 2024 ZDX
- The most serious of these, the brake booster and ABS faults, can occur with little or no warning
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction from Honda or NHTSA. That said, two are rated critical and deserve immediate appointments: the brake booster tie rod fastener on the 2020 MDX, where brake function can be lost with little warning, and the 2024 ZDX ABS fault, which can release brake pressure suddenly. The pedal pivot pin, VSA modulator, rear caliper and ILX master cylinder recalls all allow continued driving until repair, but every one of them degrades braking, so none should be left open for long.
What the free repair involves
It varies by campaign. Dealers inspect and repair the brake booster assembly as necessary on the 2020 MDX, inspect and replace the brake pedal assembly as necessary on TLX and MDX, replace the VSA modulator on RDX and Integra, replace the brake master cylinder on ILX, and simply bleed the brakes on the rear caliper recall. The 2024 ZDX gets an electronic brake control module software update, over the air or at a dealer. All free.

Common questions
The ZDX fix is over the air — do I still need a dealer?
Not necessarily. The electronic brake control module software update can be delivered over the air or installed by a dealer, free of charge. If the over-the-air update does not reach your 2024 ZDX, an Acura dealer can complete it instead.
Can I just have my ILX brake fluid flushed instead?
No. On 2016-2020 ILX vehicles, contaminated fluid can already have deformed a seal inside the master cylinder, causing an internal leak. The recall remedy is replacement of the brake master cylinder itself, which dealers do free of charge.
My brakes feel normal. Is the inspection still necessary?
Yes. Several of these defects, including the brake booster tie rod fastener and the brake pedal pivot pin, are assembly errors that give no everyday symptom until braking is compromised. The inspection is free and is the only way to confirm your vehicle.
