Why does my Acura backup camera screen go blank?
All three of these Acura recalls come down to one thing: the screen that shows your backup camera goes dark. The 2024 ZDX, recalled alongside the Honda Prologue, appears in two of them — once because a radio control module software error can blank the instrument panel display and the reverse camera image, and again because the camera itself can show a distorted or blank picture. The 2025 MDX is the third, with a center information display that can go blank entirely. Honda filed these as failures to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, the rear visibility rule. The 2024 ZDX is by far the most affected model here, named in two of the three.
Warning signs to watch for
- Blank screen where the rearview camera image should appear when you shift into reverse
- A distorted or scrambled camera image instead of a clear view behind the vehicle (2024 ZDX, 2024-2025 Prologue)
- Instrument panel display failing, so the speedometer and warning lights disappear (2024 ZDX software recall)
- Center console touchscreen going blank on the 2025 MDX
- The fault can appear without any prior warning light or message
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these three recalls tells owners to stop driving or to park outside. Honda treats them as rear-visibility compliance failures, so the vehicle is drivable while you wait for an appointment. The practical limit is that you cannot rely on the camera: back up using your mirrors and by turning to look over your shoulder, and move slowly in driveways and parking lots where a child or pet could be behind you. On the 2024 ZDX software recall the instrument panel can also blank, taking your speedometer and warning lights with it.
What the free repair involves
Three different repairs. For the 2024 ZDX display and camera software fault, dealers reprogram the vehicle radio control module software. For the later ZDX and Prologue distorted-image recall, dealers replace the rearview camera itself, with interim letters sent first while the remedy is prepared. For the 2025 MDX, dealers replace the center information display unit. All repairs are free of charge, and none is delivered over the air.

Common questions
Is a blank backup camera really worth a recall?
Yes. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 requires the rear image to display when you shift into reverse. A vehicle that cannot do this is legally noncompliant, which is why Honda filed all three of these as safety recalls.
My 2024 ZDX already had a camera recall — is this a second one?
Possibly. The 2024 ZDX appears in two separate recalls: a 2026 software recall covering the instrument panel and reverse image, and a later recall replacing the camera for a distorted or blank picture. Check your VIN against both.
Can this be fixed with a software update instead of new parts?
It depends which recall applies. The 2024 ZDX radio control module issue is a software reprogram. The 2025 MDX needs a new center information display unit, and the distorted-image recall needs a new rearview camera. Your letter specifies which.
A recall applies only to specific vehicles. Check your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
