If the EPB cannot be applied, there is an increased risk of a vehicle rollaway if the vehicle is parked on a hill without being placed into "Park." The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

These cars have an electronic parking brake — a button instead of a lever. On some of them it may not work right: it can fail to release after you set it, or it may not set at all when you press it. If the brake does not hold and you park on a hill without shifting into Park, the car can roll away on its own. Toyota dealers will reprogram the brake control computer at no charge.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to check if your C-HR is on the list.
2. Contact a Toyota dealer, or call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 (recall H0W), to have the brake control computer reprogrammed.
3. The reprogramming is free — it is a software update, not a parts job.

Component: PARKING BRAKE
Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2018 Toyota CH-R vehicles. The electronic parking brake (EPB) may not operate properly, possibly causing the parking brake not to disengage after it is applied or prevent it from being applied. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."
Safety risk: If the EPB cannot be applied, there is an increased risk of a vehicle rollaway if the vehicle is parked on a hill without being placed into "Park."
Remedy: Toyota has notified owners, and dealers will update the programming of the skid control ECU as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2017. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is H0W.
