Moderate: the vehicle still drives, but you are missing crash-avoidance braking you think you have, which raises the risk of a collision — the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Your C-HR came with a pre-collision system — it watches the road ahead with a radar sensor and can warn you and help brake if you are about to hit something. On these vehicles, the sensor was never switched on at the factory, so the system does nothing. On top of that, the dashboard gives you no warning light, so you may believe the braking help is there when it is not. Dealers will turn the sensor on.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to check whether your 2021 C-HR is included.
2. Contact a Toyota dealer, or Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 (recall 22TA02), to book the visit.
3. Have the dealer inspect and activate the radar sensor — free of charge.

Component: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: SENSING SYSTEM: RADAR
Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2021 C-HR vehicles. The radar sensor may not have been activated during production, making the pre-collision system (PCS) inoperative.
Safety risk: An inoperative PCS that does not provide a malfunction indicator to the driver, or braking assist as expected, can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and activate the radar sensor as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 22, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 22TA02.
