Volkswagen Atlas fuel tank may leak gasoline

NHTSA campaign 18V284000 · Reported 2018-05-02 · Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

critical How serious is it? About this label

A fuel leak near an ignition source can cause a fire, which is serious; the notice does not tell owners to park the vehicle, but this should be repaired right away.

What's wrong, in plain English

Because of a mistake during manufacturing, the fuel tank on certain Volkswagen Atlas vehicles may leak gasoline. The tank doesn't meet the federal standard for fuel system integrity. Leaking fuel near anything hot or sparking can catch fire. Volkswagen dealers will replace the fuel tank entirely, free of charge. This recall is an expansion of an earlier one, so some vehicles not covered before are included now. Owners were notified starting in June 2018.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether your Atlas is included. 2. Contact a Volkswagen dealer or VW customer service at 1-800-893-5298 (recall 20AW) to schedule the work. 3. Have the fuel tank replaced — the repair is free.
