Why do Volkswagen fuel systems keep leaking gasoline?
Across these ten Volkswagen recalls the same failure keeps returning: gasoline escaping somewhere between the tank and the injectors. The Atlas is the most repeated name — 2018 and 2019 tanks built with insufficient wall thickness or a mis-welded suction jet, and 2021-2022 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport long injectors assembled without filters. The Taos accounts for three: a 2022 underhood quick-connector that can detach, a 2022 fuel delivery pump that can break, and a 2025-2026 fuel pressure sensor that can separate in a rear-end crash. Quick-connectors and pumps also hit the Golf family — the 2018 Golf R hose connector and the suction pump in 2015-2020 Golf, GTI, Golf Sportwagen, Jetta GLI and Audi A3. Loose fuel rail bolts cover 2016-2018 Jettas.
Warning signs to watch for
- A smell of gasoline inside or around the car, or under the hood
- Visible fuel leaking or wet spots under the vehicle or in the engine bay
- Engine stalling or running unevenly, as with the 2019 Atlas suction jet and 2022 Taos connector
- A sudden stall with no advance warning on the 2022 Taos fuel pump recall
- No warning at all with the 2025-2026 Taos sensor — it only leaks after a rear-end crash
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these ten notices tells owners to stop driving or to park outside; Volkswagen's guidance is to schedule the free repair promptly rather than leave the car parked. The exception in urgency is a smell of gasoline or a visible leak — the notices repeatedly say to have that checked immediately, and that is the point to stop and call the dealer. The 2022 Taos fuel pump recall involves a sudden stall with no warning, so treat it as a priority. The 2025-2026 Taos sensor only matters in a rear-end crash.
What the free repair involves
Most of these are parts replacements: dealers replace the fuel tank on 2018-2019 Atlas, the long fuel injectors on 2021-2022 Atlas models, the fuel pump on the 2022 Taos, the suction pump on Golf and Audi A3 models, and the fuel rail bolts on Jettas. Others are inspect-and-replace — the Taos and Golf R fuel line connectors — or add a wiring harness extension. All free of charge; none is over-the-air.

Does the suction pump recall really include Audi A3 models?
Yes. Volkswagen Group of America filed it covering front-wheel-drive 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedans and 2015-2019 A3 Cabriolets alongside the VW Golf, GTI, Golf Sportwagen and Jetta GLI. Audi owner letters went out July 25, 2024; VW letters August 13, 2024.
