Very serious: Chrysler did not tell owners to park the vehicle, but losing steering response can happen without warning and cause a crash, so treat this as urgent and get the inspection done right away.
What's wrong, in plain English
On some 2018 Wranglers, a shaft in the steering column may have been welded badly at the factory. The bad weld can split open where the grooves are cut into the shaft. If that happens, the steering wheel can lose its center position and the front wheels may stop responding the way you expect when you turn. Dealers will look at the shaft and replace it if the weld is bad.
What you should do
2. Call your Jeep dealer or Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and ask for the earliest appointment.
3. The dealer inspects the intermediate steering shaft and replaces it if needed, free of charge.

- Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. The intermediate steering shaft may not have been properly welded causing a split where the external spline is formed.
- Safety risk
- If the weld seam splits, the steering wheel may lose center positioning causing a loss of steering responsiveness and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, replace the intermediate steering shaft, free of charge. The recall began June 21, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U48.
