Serious, because the vehicle can suddenly lose the ability to move and raise the chance of a crash, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, so get it fixed as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain Edge and Lincoln MKZ vehicles with the 2.0-liter gas engine and six-speed automatic transmission have a part called the torque converter, which passes power from the engine to the transmission. Small studs that hold it to the engine were not welded well enough. If those welds break, the torque converter comes loose from the engine and the vehicle can no longer move forward or backward, even though the engine still runs.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your vehicle is included in recall 18V390000 (Ford number 17S16).
2. Call a Ford or Lincoln dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, and schedule the repair.
3. Have the dealer replace the torque converter, which is free of charge.

Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Ford Edge and 2017 Lincoln MKZ vehicles. On vehicles with 2.0L gas engines and six-speed automatic transmissions, the torque converter weld studs may have been inadequately welded.
Safety risk: If the torque converter weld studs fail, the torque converter will not be connected to the engine flexplate and the vehicle will lose the ability to move, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque converters, free of charge. The recall began on July 5, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17S16 (S2). Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 17V-427.
