This is serious — a trailer breaking away from the tractor can cause a crash, and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, so get the inspection done as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2019 Volvo VNL and VNR trucks, the fifth wheel coupling — the plate on the tractor that the trailer locks onto — was built with a slider bracket on the outer side that is too narrow. Because that bracket is undersized, the connection may not hold the way it should, and the trailer can come loose and separate from the tractor while you are on the road. Volvo dealers will look at the bracket and put in a new one if needed.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your truck is included. 2. Call your Volvo dealer, or Volvo customer service at 1-800-528-6586 (recall RVXX1801), to schedule the fifth wheel inspection. 3. Have the bracket inspected and replaced if needed — the repair is free.

Summary: Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo) is recalling certain 2019 Volvo VNL and VNR trucks equipped with Jost fifth wheel couplings. The fifth wheel may have an outboard slider bracket that is too narrow, possibly allowing the trailer to separate from the tractor.
Safety risk: If the trailer separates from the tractor, it can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fifth wheel slider bracket, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began September 25, 2018. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-528-6586. Volvo's number for this recall RVXX1801.
