Toyota Tacoma brake part may weaken stopping power

NHTSA campaign 18V888000 · Reported 2018-12-13 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

high How serious is it? About this label

Weaker brakes and longer stopping distances raise the chance of a crash, and while the notice does not tell owners to park the truck, this is one to get scheduled promptly.

What's wrong, in plain English

The brake master cylinder is the part that turns your push on the brake pedal into pressure at the wheels. On some trucks it was machined incorrectly at the factory, which can damage a seal inside it. That reduces braking performance, so the truck needs a longer distance to stop than it should. Only trucks built with the bad part are covered, so it is worth checking your VIN. A dealer replaces the master cylinder free.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Tacoma is part of recall J16/J06.
2. Contact your Toyota dealer for an appointment, or call Toyota at 1-888-270-9371.
3. Have the brake master cylinder replaced at no cost to you.
