Volvo VNL trucks may move without driver input

NHTSA campaign 19V032000 · Reported 2019-01-14 · Volvo Trucks North America

high How serious is it? About this label

Unexpected vehicle movement can cause a crash or injure someone nearby, and although the notice does not order the truck parked, the update should be done as soon as a dealer can take it.

What's wrong, in plain English

These are big Volvo highway trucks with an automated manual transmission, a gearbox that shifts itself but still uses a clutch. A part inside the clutch can break. If it does, the truck may move on its own when the driver does not expect it, which is dangerous around loading docks, other vehicles and people on foot. The fix is a software update to the computer that controls the transmission, done free at a Volvo dealer.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm the truck is covered by recall RVXX1901.
2. Call your Volvo Trucks dealer to schedule the fix, or Volvo customer service at 1-800-528-6586.
3. Have the transmission control software updated — there is no charge.
