Jeep Wrangler and Ram 1500 steering wheel may detach
critical How serious is it? About this label
Losing the steering wheel while driving would almost certainly cause a crash and there is no warning first, so even though the notice does not order the vehicle parked, drive it only as far as the dealer.
What's wrong, in plain English
A short shaft connects your steering wheel to the rest of the steering system. On these vehicles that shaft was machined incorrectly and can break. If it breaks, the steering wheel can come off in your hands and you would have no way to steer, with no warning beforehand. A dealer will inspect the steering column and replace it if needed, at no cost. This one is worth getting checked right away rather than waiting.
What you should do
2. Call your dealer or FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and ask for the soonest appointment.
3. Have the steering column inspected and replaced if necessary, free of charge.
