This is serious on two fronts — a passenger who is not protected in a crash and other drivers who cannot read your turns — so get it repaired soon, though the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

A wiring harness — the bundle of wires that carries electrical signals around the vehicle — may not pass signals properly in some 2018 CX-9s. When that happens, the front passenger airbag can be switched off, the turn signals can stop working, and the engine may not start. A passenger airbag that does not go off in a crash leaves that person far less protected, and without turn signals other drivers cannot tell where you are heading. Dealers will repair the harness free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your CX-9 is included.
2. Call your Mazda dealer or Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 4 (recall 3419E), to book the repair.
3. Have the wiring harness repaired — there is no charge to you.

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2018 CX-9 vehicles. The wiring harness may disrupt electrical communications and disable the passenger frontal air bag, turn signals, and/or engine starting system.
Safety risk: The passenger frontal air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury. Inoperable turn signals prevent the driver from signaling to other drivers, increasing the risk of crash.
Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will repair the wiring harnesses, free of charge. The recall began July 26, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 3419E.
