Mazda electrical recalls: lost drive power, bad gauges, false warning lights
Five recalls split cleanly by era. The two older ones are single-model faults: a wiring harness on the 2018 CX-9 that can disrupt electrical communications and disable the passenger frontal airbag, turn signals or engine starting, and 2019 Mazda3 programming that lets the passenger airbag deactivation light and the front seat belt status indicators show the wrong thing. The three newest all involve the CX-90 and CX-70 electrified models: inverter software that can trigger malfunction lights and a loss of drive power in EV mode, a Dash Electrical Supply Unit that can leave the defroster, seat belt warning, 360° monitor and high-voltage battery cooling inoperative at startup, and a fuel gauge that reads inaccurately on mild hybrids.
Warning signs to watch for
- Malfunction indicator lights on, and a loss of drive power in EV mode on the plug-in hybrid CX-70 and CX-90
- Defroster, seat belt warning or the 360° view monitor not working after you start the vehicle
- A fuel gauge reading that doesn't match how much fuel you've actually used
- On the 2018 CX-9: turn signals that don't work, or the engine not starting
- On the 2019 Mazda3: the passenger airbag deactivation light off when the airbag is actually deactivated, or seat belt status indicators not displaying
Is it safe to keep driving?
No notice in this group orders owners to stop driving or park outside. The plug-in hybrid inverter recall is the one to treat with urgency, since drive power can be lost while moving — book it promptly. With the fuel gauge recall you can keep driving but should refuel earlier than usual so you are not stranded in traffic. Do not drive the CX-90 or CX-70 with a windshield you cannot defrost, and on the CX-9 and Mazda3, check by eye that passengers are belted until the repair is made.
What the free repair involves
Three of the five are software done at the dealer: improved inverter software for the plug-in hybrids, a reprogrammed Dash Electrical Supply Unit, and a body control module update for the fuel gauge. The 2018 CX-9 needs its wiring harness repaired, and the 2019 Mazda3 gets a new passenger airbag and seat belt status indicator assembly. Every repair is free; none is over-the-air.

Common questions
Will my CX-70 lose power without warning in EV mode?
Mazda says improper inverter software may illuminate the malfunction indicator lights and that a loss of drive power may occur in EV mode. Lights may come on first, but treat any power loss as urgent and get the free software update.
Can I trust my CX-90's fuel gauge until the recall is done?
No. Mazda says the instrument cluster fuel gauge in 2024-2025 CX-90 and 2025 CX-70 mild hybrids may display an inaccurate reading. Refuel earlier than you normally would, since stalling in traffic is the crash risk, and get the module update.
Is the 2018 CX-9 wiring recall also an airbag problem?
The wiring harness can disable the passenger frontal air bag along with the turn signals and engine starting system, which is why it is filed as electrical. Dealers repair the harness free of charge; the recall began July 26, 2019.
