Volvo VNL trucks: air tank strap bolts may loosen

NHTSA campaign 19V510000 · Reported 2019-07-02 · Volvo Trucks North America

high How serious is it? About this label

This is serious because a tank dropping into traffic can cause a crash, and while Volvo did not order owners to park the truck, the inspection should be done as soon as possible.

What's wrong, in plain English

These trucks have an extra air tank for the transmission, held on by metal straps. The bolts clamping those straps were tightened too much at the factory, which can bend the strap where the bolt anchors. A bent strap can let the bolt pull loose. If that happens, the tank can fall off the truck and onto the road, where it becomes a hazard for other drivers.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your truck is affected.
2. Contact a Volvo Trucks dealer, or Volvo Trucks customer service at 1-800-528-6586 (recall RVXX1904), right away.
3. The dealer inspects the air tank strap and replaces it if needed, free of charge.

Summary
Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo Trucks) is recalling certain 2019-2020 VAH, VHD, VNL, and VNR vehicles. The t-bolt clasps on the transmission auxiliary air tank straps may have been over-tightened, resulting in potential deformation to the strap where the t-bolt is anchored.
Safety risk
The deformation of the air tank strap t-bolts may cause the t-bolt to disconnect from the strap allowing the tank to drop to the ground and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Volvo Trucks will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the air tank strap, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began August 7, 2019. Owners may contact Volvo Trucks customer service at 1-800-528-6586. Volvo Truck's number for this recall is RVXX1904.
