Losing your headlights badly reduces how much you can see and how well others see you, which raises crash risk, so get it repaired soon and avoid driving at night or in poor visibility if a headlight is already out.

What's wrong, in plain English

The control unit that runs the headlights on these BMW and Toyota Supra models can fail. When it does, you can lose one headlight or both of them. That leaves you with little or no light ahead of you, which matters most at night or in bad weather, and can happen without warning while you are driving. Dealers will replace the headlight control units at no charge to the owner.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your car is covered. 2. Contact your dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 (Toyota owners: 1-888-270-9371), to schedule the free headlight control unit replacement. 3. Check both headlights regularly, and if one or both fail, avoid driving after dark until the repair is done.

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 Z4 M40i, Z4 sDrive30i, 330i and 330i xDrive vehicles as well as 2020 Toyota Supra vehicles. The headlight control units may fail causing a loss of one or both of the headlights.
Safety risk: Headlight failure can reduce the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headlight control units, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 17, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.
